Jaguar F-TYPE Unveiled in Paris

27/09/2012
by Nick Guthry

The F-TYPE, an all-new, two-seater, Jaguar sports car has been unveiled this evening at an exclusive event at Musée Rodin, Paris.

Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar, said:"Jaguar is a founder member of the sports car segment with a rich sporting bloodline stretching over 75 years, and in the F-TYPE we've reignited that flame. The F-TYPE isn't designed to be like anyone else's sports car. It's a Jaguar sports car - ultra-precise, powerful, sensual and, most of all, it feels alive."

Jaguar f-Type

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW

The F-TYPE is an all-new, two-seater, Jaguar sports car

A front-engined, rear-wheel drive convertible, the F-TYPE is engineered to deliver pure dynamic driving reward and stunning performance

Visually, the F-TYPE's exterior demonstrates a new sports car design language for Jaguar, with cleaner lines delivered through the discreet use of technology such as deployable spoiler and door handles

The F-TYPE's interior features a driver-focused philosophy, with engaging controls encased in dramatic architecture. Unique technical grains tailor the trim materials, further differentiating the dual-cockpit cabin

Three models will be available - F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and the F-TYPE V8 S. They are powered respectively by Jaguar's new 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine in 340PS and 380PS outputs and its 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol producing 495PS

The range-topping F-TYPE V8S will reach 60mph in 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 186mph. The 380PS V6 F-TYPE S will reach 60mph in 4.8 seconds and 171mph, the equivalent figures for the F-TYPE are 5.1 seconds and 161mph

All engines drive through an eight-speed 'Quickshift' transmission, a centrally mounted SportShift selector offering full manual sequential control, as do the steering wheel-mounted paddles

Both the S models have a limited-slip differential - the V6's mechanical and the V8's electronic - to maximise traction and driver reward

The S models also have an 'Active exhaust' system and an optional Configurable Dynamics programme. This allows the driver to tailor a number of the dynamic features to personal taste and includes lap timer and G-meter functionality

The F-TYPE is constructed around the fourth generation of Jaguar's acclaimed lightweight aluminium architecture using industry-first technology

Torsional and lateral stiffness have been prioritised to maximise handling agility. Around that rigid aluminium structure, every system - steering, brakes, powertrain - has been optimised for immediacy of response to driver inputs

All-aluminium double wishbone front and rear suspension systems provide precise body control, with adaptive damping adding a further layer of dynamic capability

Jaguar f-Type

SUMMARY

The new Jaguar F-TYPE represents a return to the company's heartland: a two-seater, convertible sports car focused on performance, agility and driver involvement. The F-TYPE is a continuation of a sporting bloodline that stretches back more than 75 years and encompasses some of the most beautiful, thrilling and desirable cars ever built.

The engineering ethos underpinning the F-TYPE is centred on Jaguar's industry-leading expertise in the use of aluminium. Featuring the most advanced iteration of Jaguar's acclaimed rigid and lightweight aluminium architecture to date, the F-TYPE has ideally balanced weight distribution that allows its involving rear-wheel drive dynamics to be explored to the full. Utilising extensive Computer Aided Engineering programmes, the attention to detail involved in the F-TYPE's creation even extended to the development of a new, lighter, aluminium front subframe.

In order to maximise the benefits of its advanced structure, the F-TYPE features all-aluminium double wishbone front and rear suspension and a quick-ratio steering rack for ultimate responsiveness. The aluminium architecture has been optimised to provide the stiffest possible underpinnings for the suspension with rigidity gains of more than 30 per cent in key areas compared to any other Jaguar application.

Jaguar f-Type

Three variants will be available at launch - F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine with all engines featuring stop/start technology to maximise efficiency.

A new 3.0-litre V6, developed from Jaguar's highly acclaimed 5.0-litre V8, is available in either 340PS or 380PS variants, powering the F-TYPE and F-TYPE S respectively. Both applications exhibit the same free-revving, willing nature that encourages the enthusiastic driver to explore the full extent of the engines' abilities.

The V6 models are joined by a newly developed member of Jaguar's V8 engine family. Producing 495PS and 625Nm of torque in the F-TYPE V8 S model, it has an astonishing torque-to-weight ratio of 375Nm/tonne, accelerates to 60mph in 4.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h) while emitting 259g/km of CO2.

Jaguar f-Type

The 380PS V6 F-TYPE S covers the 0-60mph sprint in 4.8 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds) and has an electronically limited top speed of 171mph (275km/h), with CO2 emissions of 213g/km.

The 340PS V6 F-TYPE accelerates to 60mph in 5.1 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 161mph (260km/h), while emitting just 209g/km of CO2.

An active exhaust system, which is standard on the S and V8 S models, adds another dimension of driver-engagement. Valves in the exhaust system open under load from 3000rpm which allows the exhaust note to build to a thrilling crescendo at the redline.

The F-TYPE has a set of eight closely-spaced, sporting ratios in its Quickshift transmission, giving greater driver control. The V6-powered S model also includes a Dynamic Launch feature, which optimises acceleration from rest.

Jaguar f-Type

The company's eye to the future is encapsulated in the assertive design language that deliberately challenges preconceptions. Jaguars have always defined sinuous, muscular simplicity and the F-TYPE is no exception, its shape being defined by two 'heartlines' forming the front and rear wings.

Taking inspiration from the C-X16 concept unveiled in 2011, the front of the F-TYPE features a new interpretation of the bold angular Jaguar grille from which flows the muscular clamshell bonnet with its signature 'power bulge'. The all important heartline begins its journey in the blade dissecting the shark-like gills on either side of the grille before leading the eye to the top of the front wing, emphasised by the bi-xenon headlamp and integral LED daytime running lights, into the door and towards the rear of the car where it gracefully disappears.

Jaguar f-Type

Its journey is taken up at this point by the second heartline which swells out to form the muscular rear haunch before sweeping dramatically around the sensual low tail, made possible by the inclusion of an active rear spoiler which deploys at speed to reduce lift by up to 120kg. Full LED rear lamps create a new Jaguar sports car signature by reinterpreting classic cues from the past and, by wrapping around to the trailing edge of the rear wheelarch, emphasise the powerful stance of the car and its rear-wheel drive sporting potential.

The focus on driver involvement and sporting performance in the F-TYPE is emphasised by the 'one plus one' layout of the asymmetric cabin. This is evidenced by the grab handle which sweeps down the centre console on the passenger side, delineating it from the driver's position. Further differentiation is provided by the use of different trim materials either side of the cabin, with a more technical finish on the driver's side.

Taking inspiration from cockpits of fighter airplanes, the controls are ergonomically grouped by function. Further aeronautical inspiration can be found in the joystick-shaped SportShift selector controlling the eight-speed transmission. The air vents on top of the dashboard will only deploy when instructed to by either the driver or complex control algorithms, staying tucked discreetly out of sight in other circumstances.

Jaguar f-Type

"With the F-TYPE, the Jaguar engineering team focused on delivering greater dynamic driving reward than ever before. To make that a reality, every engineer has had very tough targets to hit: every one of those targets has been met and, in many cases, exceeded, making the F-TYPE a car that delivers precisely the key sporting attributes that we intended."

F-TYPE: Public Debut One Week Away & First Picture

21/09/2012
by Nick Guthry

The F-TYPE, Jaguar's all-new sports car, will make its public debut in just one week's time: Thursday 27th September, at the Paris Auto Show.

Following an internet leak, this morning Jaguar released this single picture of its 911 rival, closely based on that C-X16 concept which wowed us all back at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011.

Jaguar F-Type

A front-engined, rear-wheel drive convertible, three models of F-TYPE will be available. Powered respectively by 340PS and 380PS versions of Jaguar's new 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine and a new derivative of its 5.0-litre V8 supercharged unit, each F-TYPE is engineered for pure dynamic driving reward and stunning performance.

A man who knows better than most the driving experience that the F-TYPE will deliver is Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity, Jaguar:"Fundamentally, a great sports car is one you'll look forward to driving because it's fun, and the F-TYPE definitely delivers on that score. We've worked hard to make sure that responses to steering, throttle and brakes are absolutely immediate, a task made far easier by the rigid aluminium structure at the car's base. It's precise and exciting, a car that you'll want to drive for the sake of driving alone - and it sounds fantastic!

Jaguar Heritage Racing crowns successful debut season with win at Goodwood

19/09/2012
by Nick Guthry

Goodwood, 17th September 2012. The Jaguar Heritage Racing team scored a season finale victory in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy night race on Friday, which kicked-off the world famous Goodwood Revival Racing weekend.

Jaguar C-Type

The victory marked an emphatic end to an incredible first season in racing for Jaguar Heritage Racing, who claimed the top step of the podium at Grand Prix De Monaco Historique and the Nürburgring Old Timer.

The 2012 Freddie March Memorial Trophy at Goodwood Revival was a challenging 90-minute, two-driver event - the first ever night race at this most historic of racing festivals and designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first Goodwood Nine Hours race.

Sharing the Jaguar Heritage Racing ex-Fangio C-Type with historic racer John Young, Alex Buncombe pushed incredibly hard as the sun set over the beautiful Goodwood Racing Circuit to take the lead, and set the fastest lap on the way to a memorable victory over a formidable line-up of Aston Martin, Ferrari and Maserati competitors.

Speaking shortly after the win, Alex Buncombe said:"Winning the first Goodwood Revival night race is a fantastic achievement for us. In a season where I am also competing in the FIA GT3 Blancpain Endurance Series, it has been a privilege to be part of a winning team that has seen Jaguar beat its premium brand rivals on the most famous race tracks in the world."

Jaguar C-Type

Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director Jaguar Cars summarised the season:"Winning the Freddie March Memorial Trophy crowned a successful first season for Jaguar Heritage Racing. It has been an evocative sight to see factory supported C- and D-Types back on the racetrack. These cars embody the seductive performance that is at the heart of the Jaguar brand. They form our design and technology bloodline, which runs through every new Jaguar car and will be clear in the DNA of the new F-TYPE, which will be unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show."

Jaguar D-Type

Jaguar Heritage Racing was launched at the Royal Automobile Club in London in March 2012. Jaguar has one of the most successful racing heritages of any car brand and the Heritage Racing programme set out to put "works" supported Jaguar C- and D-Types back on iconic circuits for the first time since the mid-1950's.

Jaguar ready to race at 2012 Goodwood Revival

12/09/2012
by Nick Guthry

Jaguar Cars aims to provide a highlight to spectators at this weekend's Goodwood Revival, with Jaguar Heritage Racing entering race-ready versions of the legendary C-type and D-type cars.

See below exclusive preview film featuring legendary Jaguar cars in action at Goodwood Motor Circuit

Jaguar's entries at Goodwood mark the final race in an incredibly successful first season in historic motorsport for Jaguar Heritage Racing. At the Revival meet, the team aims to build on victories already recorded in 2012 at Monaco Historique, Le Mans Classic and the Nürburgring AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix.

The race-ready C-type and D-type will line up in the hotly-contested Freddie March Memorial Trophy and Sussex Trophy respectively. In addition, Jaguar Cars' partner in Jaguar Heritage Racing, JD Classics, will enter a race prepared Jaguar Mk. 7 saloon. The vast Mk. 7 will be driven in the St Mary's Trophy race by JD Classics' owner Derek Hood, and Le Mans 24hrs racer Andy Wallace.

Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar said: "Goodwood Revival is unique and a world class event for collectors, drivers and enthusiasts of classic cars and heritage motor sport.

"It showcases some of the finest and most successful race cars ever built and I am proud that we are able to bring the rich heritage of Jaguar to life; both on track and as part of our bespoke displays.

"It is an excellent opportunity to celebrate Jaguar's history, and a showcase for our enduring and distinctive brand of values of seductive design, innovative technology and sporting performance."

Each race at Goodwood Revival comprises a unique field of professional racing drivers mixed with highly capable seasoned historic racers, so Jaguar Heritage Racing driver Alex Buncombe expects stiff competition at the famous race track in Southern England. Over the course of the weekend, Alex and John Young will be driving the ex-Juan Manuel Fangio C-type, in addition to a D-type in race specification.

Jaguar Cars also has a static display for public viewing at the period recreation of the Earls Court Motor Show, where it will present a C-type and XK 120. Accompanying these on the Richmond Lawn will be a C-type, D-type and XK 140.

Swallow to Jaguar 90th Anniversary Tour

06/09/2012
by Nick Guthry

The exclusive Tour organised by Jaguar Heritage to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the Swallow Sidecar Company (the predecessor to Jaguar Cars) got underway on Sunday, September 2 in Coventry.

The participants assembled in the grandiose surroundings of Coombe Abbey where they were staying for the first night. Following registration formalities and a driver briefing, the guests were transported by coach into central Coventry - Jaguar's spiritual home for over 70 years.

On arrival they were treated to a guided tour of the old cathedral, the ruins of which remain as a proud monument alongside the new cathedral designed by Basil Spence, which was consecrated in 1962.

1929 Austin Seven Swallow

Above the oldest car on the Tour - a 1929 Austin Seven Swallow.

Following this, they tranferred to the magnifcent St. Mary's Guildhall with a drinks reception in the 14th century undercroft followed by dinner in the main hall. St. Mary's is considered to be the finest medieval guildhall in the country and has a history going back to 1340 when building started on the former site of Coventry Castle.

The opening address and official welcome on behalf of Coventry City was delivered by well-known local businessman Joe Elliott who is Chairman of the Coventry Transport Museum and a Jaguar Heritage Trustee. Other honoured guests included Ralph Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, Norman Dewis, former Jaguar Test and Development chief, and Mike O'Driscoll, Chairman of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust.

On a fine Monday morning, the Tour particpants set off from Coombe Abbey on the first leg of their journey which took them to Sir William Lyons former home, Wappenbury Hall, where there was a photo opportunity alongside an original Swallow Sidecar outside Wappenbury's famous front door.

Above some of the participating vehicles parked up at Coombe Abbey ready for the Tour start.

The Tour then headed via the Shuttleworth Collection to Cambridge for the next overnight stop, where guests were treated to an exclusive dinner in the ancient St. John's College. From Cambridge the Tour will make its way round England in an anti-clockwise direction before ending up in Blackpool, the birthplace of the Swallow Sidecar Company, for the final two nights. En-route attractions include, the royal estate at Sandringham, Castle Howard, the National Railway Museum in York, the Aysgarth Falls and beautiful Lake Windermere.

Around 40 cars are taking part in the Tour ranging from a 1929 Austin Seven Swallow through to the latest XJ Super V8. There are fine examples of many models from the Jaguar history books including Mark V, Mark ll, Mark X and 240 saloons as well as SS100, XK140, XK150 and E-type sports cars from all three series.
